What is fascia and soffit?

Fascia is the board that runs along the edge of your roof – it’s what your gutters are fixed to, and it protects the ends of your roof timbers from the weather.

Soffit is the board underneath it, bridging the gap between the wall and the roof edge, and it lets your roof space breathe by allowing air to flow in and out.

When either one fails, it stops doing its job – gutters lose their grip, and moisture starts building up where it shouldn’t.

Paint peeling or bubbling
Gutters sagging, tilting, or pulling away from the house
Staining or green streaks running down the brickwork
Timber soft or crumbling to the touch
Gaps opening up where the soffit meets the wall

They sourced and repaired broken ridge tiles on my very old roof, added new fascia to the cottage where the wood was rotting, redid the valley between my extension and cottage which was on verge leaking and holding water, and redid a valley repair that was not done properly on the old roof. Before finding First Choice Roofing, I met with 15 different tradesmen. None of them could give me a precise diagnosis or demonstrated evident dishonesty. First Choice Roofing came in, looked at the house and produced an exact list of issues not only causing the leak but also identified other issues with the house within an hour. They explained and showed me everything. First Choice Roofing is not the regular roofer company you can find online. My house had serious structural, plumbing issues as well as a need to fix the many shortcuts, omissions or negligent work done by cowboys builders or plumbers I previously hired. Do you replace the gutters as well, or is that a separate job?

Gutters are always replaced as part of the job, never left on and re-secured. Fascia, soffit and gutters are fitted as one system in a single visit, with downpipes replaced where they’re present. That includes any rear extension on the property.

Will you cap over the existing boards to keep the cost down?

No. The existing fascia, soffit and guttering are stripped off completely before anything new goes on. Capping over old timber hides rot rather than removing it. The boards look fine for a while, then fail again with the damage still spreading underneath. Where rotted or damaged timber is found once the boards are off, it’s replaced as part of the work.
